HiPPO’s (Highest Paid Person’s Opinion): How to deal with them
HiPPO, the acronym for “highest paid person’s opinion”, is the manager pops into your project at the last moment and offers an opinion on what to include to make the project a success. You should consider the idea for obvious reasons, even if it’s out of scope, past deadline or as crazy as buying Volkswagen stock. Altogether, the HiPPO theory describes an organization’s reliance on human instinct rather than data in the decision-making process.
Ron Johnson, former Apple’s senior vice president of retail operations, arrived at JC Penney with one mission: to turn around the downhill trend of revenue decrease for three years in a row that the company was struggling with. At that time, Johnson was also certainly the highest paid person in the company, with a package of $52 million. During his CEO mandate, Johnson trusted his gut feeling rather than the available data and ignored both historical prospects and new information, defining that one could classify employees within two types:
- skeptics: the ones reluctant to follow a strategy not backed up by data; and,
- believers: the true followers of a control freak leader that could drive the company to the heaven of innovation and profit (rings a bell, Apple?)
Nonetheless, Ron Johnson exited JC Penney with a list of accomplishments that he certainly didn’t intend to leave as his legacy:
- The company burned through nearly $1 billion in 17 months, taking its cash balance from $1.8 billion to $930 million
- Revenue fell by 25 percent in 2012
- The company’s market capitalization fell by nearly 50 percent on Johnson’s watch
A/B testing to the rescue
Hence, to the question on how to deal with a HiPPO who clearly outweighs you on the org chart, AB testing may be a good answer. Instead of just answering something like “Your opinion, while interesting, is irrelevant”, which could let you to receive a P45 form sooner rather than later, go for a “Great idea Boss! We’ll test it.”
And definitely give it a try. Choose a couple of core metrics, put together an hypothesis and apply the suggestions that your boss has kindly provided you with. Then just test the outcome it in a subset of your customers. If the new version underperforms the current one (on any of the metrics for which the hypothesis was formulated), you’ve got a damn good argument to justify why should the company rely on a data driven decisions, rather than on managerial guts learned in top business schools.
